Complete Worker Health

0

noravirusPreventing occupational ill health is a key focus for HSE. Many more workers become ill from occupational health issues than ever die from workplace accidents.

However, the health challenges in workplaces are many and varied. Their long latency can make them appear difficult to identify and manage and the health of the working population is not solely related to workplace conditions.

That said, these are not reasons to do nothing.

Not only is it a legal requirement to protect the health of your workers, improving your management of worker health and wellbeing also brings tangible business benefits and protects your most important asset: your reputation.

Although protecting the health and wellbeing of workers makes sound business sense, we often find that organisations don't know where to begin or are wasting money on ineffective health initiatives.

As the governments' chief occupational health adviser, we have expertise in the causes of work-related ill health and the measures which can prevent or minimise it.

We work with organisations to help them understand and improve the health risk management of their workers, helping them apply the hierarchy of control to distinguish between what they must, should and could do.

Our Complete Worker Health Solutions

Let our experts help you take an empowered approach to managing health.

Our Complete Worker Health approach offers an impartial overview of your health strategy. We will work with you to provide the tools and knowledge you need to devise a tailored, sustainable plan that will lead your organisation towards health risk management excellence.

Safe Net Zero

0
0

The UK has set a world-leading net zero target to address the inter-generational challenge of climate change: we were the first major economy to take decisive action and make it a legal obligation to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 - 2045 for Scotland.

Positive action towards these targets is set out in the Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, the Net Zero Strategy, the BEIS Energy White Paper, the Scottish Government's Hydrogen Policy Statement and the National Infrastructure Strategy, which all make it clear that we will need both a diverse mix of low carbon energy technologies, plus a rapid acceleration of their development and deployment, in order to meet our targets.

From a health and safety perspective, the scale and speed of the changes required means we must pay even greater attention to keeping consumers and industry safe from new risks, not forgetting those that existed before.

Proactively 'designing-in' safety as part of the core technological development is imperative if we are to get it right first time and introduce the energy technologies and regulatory frameworks of the future 'better, greener and faster'.

HSE's Safe Net Zero solutions integrate health and safety into the development and deployment of the new and novel technologies underpinning the UK's decarbonisation activities.

We combine our regulatory insight, our world class science and engineering capabilities and our experience, learned from over a century of accident analysis, process safety development and major accident hazard and risk management as part of Great Britain's health and safety regulator, and apply it to the deployment of new technology, or novel use of existing technology, with the aim of making the transition to net zero as safe as possible, as fast as possible.

Data-driven Insights

data analytics from HSL.jpg Data and its increasing potential to improve the way we work is a key priority area for the UK Government.

The National Data Strategy (NDS) sets out the UK vision for better data management. It puts the UK at the forefront of the artificial intelligence and data revolution to create thousands of good quality jobs and drive economic growth. The strategy supports the Levelling Up Agenda and Build Back Better, with the use of data and technology underpinning key objectives such as Net Zero.

Unlocking intelligence from data is not only advantageous for government - it's also tremendously valuable for other public sector organisations and industry alike. Although it sounds complex - data is just another word for information. And it's something we all collect, but don't necessarily use to full advantage.

Quite simply, the ability to extract intelligence from data, has the potential to predict risk and save lives.

We know this, because for over 40 years as Great Britain's health and safety regulator we've used robust analysis techniques to extract intelligence from the data we collect. We use it to inform and prioritise our regulatory activity, underpin our guidance and policy and support our scientific research activities.

And now our data scientists can do this for you. By applying increasingly innovative techniques, HSE can help you to gain fresh and beneficial insights from the health and safety data you already own, unlocking intelligence that will help you to take an evidence-based approach to managing and improving health and safety risk within your organisation. Read more about what we do in the links below or contact us: discoveringsafety@hse.gov.uk.

We regularly provide insights, event invitations, articles and resources through a free HSE Data-driven Insights e-bulletin service. Register now to receive the next e-bulletin.

  • Discovering Safety

A programme that aims to use data and analytical techniques to provide new insights and approaches to help to reduce injuries and fatalities from workplace activity.

  • National Population Database

HSE: International Leader in Health and Safety

Flags image bright

HSE works with partners across the world to transfer knowledge and share expertise to improve health and safety performance, save lives and reduce injuries.

We work with:

  • governments
  • other regulators
  • international organisations

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the government regulator for occupational health and safety in Great Britain and a world leader in reducing and regulating the risks to health and safety arising from work activity.

The foundation of the current health and safety system in Great Britain was established by the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 with one simple principle: that those who create risk are best placed to control that risk.

The success of the system has led to Great Britain having one of the best combined health and safety records in the world, with many countries choosing to use the GB model as a basis for their own framework.

The GB model is underpinned by a unique combination of regulation, policy and science.

The role of science and evidence

Since its creation in 1974, HSE has undertaken scientific research, testing, monitoring and accident investigations to create evidence that underpins its regulatory activities of setting policy, inspecting workplaces and enforcing the law.

This scientific activity has been undertaken by HSE's own scientists using facilities at the Science and Research Centre (SRC), located in Buxton, Derbyshire. More about us

Our heritage

The Science and Research Centre (previously known as the Health and Safety Laboratory, HSL) was created in 1974 by amalgamating a number of pre-existing science establishments, some of which had themselves been in existence since 1911.

The body of knowledge, expertise and capability at the Centre therefore represents over 100 years of continuous work to understand how accidents happen in workplace settings and how to make those workplaces safer for all.

Working with others

Not only does the science and research we perform support HSE in its role as an evidence-based, world-class regulator, we turn our combination of scientific expertise, real-world experience and knowledge of the regulatory landscape into solutions that help wider government and industry solve the health, safety and wellbeing challenges of their everyday work, as well as in times of crisis.

We make these solutions available through our bespoke research programmes, our testing services, our training courses and the publications and tools we publish.

Our solutions relating to areas such as Safe Net Zero, Complete Worker Health, Enhancing Resilient Infrastructure and Data-driven Insights also makes us unrivalled in our ability to assist both public and private sector organisations research and safely enable the products, processes and innovative technologies of the future.

We offer this support not only to those located in Great Britain but also to other countries and regulators, helping them to build capability and implement improved regulatory regimes, especially in construction and high hazard process industries.

The SRC has also worked internationally with other Governments and organisations based in other countries to transfer its knowledge and to share its expertise. The proven solutions and interventions developed by the SRC can be implemented in other countries, cultures and societies to bring about similar health and safety improvements to those seen in GB.

Enhancing Resilient Infrastructure

0
0

Operating and maintaining safe infrastructure is not only a regulatory requirement, it makes sound business sense: it protects workers and reduces unplanned and unnecessary downtime, boosting profit and productivity.

From complex environments, such as chemical plants and offshore installations, to more conventional work equipment and machinery, organisations need to know that the infrastructure and assets they are responsible for are safe and that the right management systems are in place to keep them that way.

The applies to the workspaces of the future too - every infrastructure sector is likely to face transformative technological change over the next twenty years, underpinned by a national infrastructure strategy committed to building a Britain with world class infrastructure.

If we are to achieve these ambitions, we need to proactively 'design-in' safety as part of the process. That way we stand the best chance of getting it right first time, helping government and industry to deliver infrastructure projects better, greener and faster.

HSE's Enhancing Resilient Infrastructure solutions can support the management of today's and the development of tomorrow's safe and resilient infrastructure.

We do this by helping organisations to continuously improve. We help you to develop robust, pragmatic and proactive approaches to managing your existing assets and infrastructure. We also help you to 'design-in' health and safety as part of the infrastructure and technologies of the future.

We combine the regulatory insight, the world class science and engineering capabilities and the experience we have learned from over a century of incident investigation, process safety development and major accident hazard risk management as part of Great Britain's health and safety regulator.

We apply this to real-world challenges, with the aim of minimising harm and maintaining optimal health and safety performance.

Musculoskeletal Disorders: Managing the Risk of Manual Handling and Display Screen Equipment for Workers on Site or Working from Home

The world of work is constantly changing but the pandemic has made adaptation of the work environment and working practices necessary for many organisations. In this 'new normal' era, organisations must remain mindful of MSD risks and take ongoing action to monitor and manage them. This strong focus on worker health and safety, in turn, benefits organisational performance.

To help to inform employers, we were proud to host a free webinar on how to effectively manage the risk of MSDs in your workplace and protect your home workers. This hour-long event featured experts from HSE including HM Health and Safety Inspectors and our Principal Ergonomist to discuss current guidance and principles and give some practical examples of where a best-practice, proportionate approach worked well.

We took questions during the webinar and NEBOSH and TSO joined us to highlight official resources, products and services that can help you to identify and reduce risk of injury.
